Firewire Surfboards at Hotline Surfboards
It all started in 1979 as a ding repair business in Gurney Collins’ backyard. Gurney was good at fixing surfboards so all his friends brought him their boards to fix. Soon Gurney started repairing boards for all the surf shops in Virginia Beach. He happened to have a red phone that seemed to ring constantly with people and shops checking on the status of their repairs so one day when his friend Butch answered the phone “Hotline” the name stuck.
Gurney’s ding repair business eventually evolved into surfboard manufacturing that distributed boards up and down the coast for 15 years. Eventually, he needed a storefront to showcase all of his boards so, in 1984, the first showroom was opened on 3rd Street at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach. In 1991 Gurney and his wife Cammi moved the shop to Norfolk Avenue where it remained for nearly 10 years. In July of 2000 the store was relocated to corner of Baltic Ave. and Virginia Beach Blvd where the flagship store stands today. Two more shops in Virginia beach have been added to the mix, a skate shop near Lynnhaven Mall, and a store in the Red Mill area.
Gurney no longer does ding repairs and only shapes an occasional board for a friend, but his passion for the sport remains. He still conducts research and development on a regular basis..if you know what I mean.

Firewire Surfboards at Central Coast Surfboards
Central Coast Surfboards had its origins in the dormitories of the local university, Cal Poly, when founder Mike Chaney and two other fellow surfers decided to provide surfing and skating products to the local community of surfers. At that time there were no surf shops in the area and it was necessary to travel hundreds of miles to see any kind of selection of surfboards, wetsuits, and related supplies. Shortly thereafter, a small shop was started in the outskirts of downtown San Luis Obispo and it didn't take long for interest in the new business to grow.
In 1978, the shop was doing well enough to warrant a change of location and Central Coast Surfboards began doing business on a larger scale in downtown San Luis Obispo. The expanded nature of the business led to other opportunities including international surfboard exporting, sailboats, windsurfing, snowboards and men's and women's apparel.
In the 80's, Central Coast Surfboards expanded its retail knowledge to mail-order and began selling product on a worldwide level.
Central Coast Surfboards has remained core to its surfing roots supporting local surfers and skaters since day one. Sam George, Dave Parmenter, Cole Simler, Alistair Craft, Terrence McNulty, Chris Burke, Sara Gearhardt, Carl Holm, Doug Smith, Russ Pope, and Nate Tyler are just a few of the CCS notables that have gone on to do great things in the surfing world.

Firewire Surfboards at K Coast Surf Shop
K-Coast Surf Shop first opened its doors over eighteen years ago in the spring of 1989 on Somerset Street in downtown Ocean City. During that first summer, the tiny 600 square foot shop was originally called Kookaburra Coast, named after the Australian Kingfisher bird. Now you know what the "K" stands for!! The shop and its resources, like the Kookaburra, were tiny, but the plans for it were huge in the minds of two surfers and best friends that had met while bussing tables at Phillips Crab House in 1982.
After a cold and hungry winter, yet still optimistic, Mark and Chris, with their cars as collateral, secured a small loan to take advantage of the opportunity to move the shop to a larger location across the street into what was the original Ocean City Post Office. The new location, at the corner of Somerset Street and Baltimore Avenue, with its name shortened to K-Coast, started to gain a loyal downtown clientele and became known for its rootsy appeal with Mark, Chris and Mark's mom as the only employees and a surfboard shaping room in the back. Bartending to make ends meet and always with the goal of having a location on Coastal Highway, the boys spied an opportunity when an old carpet shop went up for lease on 78th Street in the fall of 1990. The 78th Street location was a dream come true but needed to be completely gutted and also forced the pair to become landlords as they had to rent out the upstairs apartment to help meet the rent and hopefully make it all work.
Business at the 78th Street location grew steadily, slowly taking over the entire building by 1995 as the need for more retail space was needed. In 1992, Mark "Hairball" Harrell, a local standout surfer joined the staff and would eventually become the K-Coast General manager. In order to concentrate on the demands of the growing highway location, the downtown location was closed in 1996. K-Coast grew steadily during the mid to late nineties and established itself as "Maryland's Largest Surf Shop" with the largest selection of surfboards, skateboards, bodyboards and hardgoods found in the Mid-Atlantic. As many of the older surf shops in Ocean City went out of business for one reason or another in the 1990's, K-Coast was now one of the oldest established shops currently in business.
By 1999, Mark and Chris could see the time coming soon when the amount of customers was outstripping the size of the 78th Street shop. Later that year K-Coast signed a contract to purchase a half acre parcel at 36th Street in Ocean City. In July of 2005 the new 10,000 square foot flagship store was opened making it one of the largest surf shops in the United States. Whether you're at 78th or 35th Street, both shops are only a two minute walk from the door to the surf.

Firewire Surfboards at Aqua East Surf Shop
Aqua East Surf Shop opened in 1973 by surfer/skater Sandy Forsyth who was 19 at the time. Sandy started surfing in the summer of 8th grade in 1967 on a 9'6 Velzy that he bought from a department store. Yes, back then there were few surf shops, but surfboards were carried in some men's clothing, hardware, and department stores that were located in coastal cities. A few years later during the short board evolution Sandy started building surfboards in his parent's garage and on April 1, 1973 he opened Aqua East Surf Shop in a small store about the size of a bedroom. Sandy soon found that building boards and running a shop did not leave much time for surfing and skating so he stopped building boards to concentrate on making his store the best possible and allowing him more time to surf, skate and test product.
Surfers and skaters soon flocked to Aqua East. Here was someone who knew what they wanted because Sandy used it while surfing and skating. Soon Aqua East doubled in size and in 1983 Sandy built his own 5,000 square foot building. Everyone thought he was crazy and that no way would surfing support such a large store. This store let Sandy expand into more clothing - especially women's and to carry a lot more surfboards and accessories. After a few years Sandy saw that he needed even a bigger store - a super store where he would have plenty of space to carry surfboards, skateboards and the other sports that he enjoyed along with swimwear and lifestyle clothing. Sandy always liked to give his customers the best selection, possible. In the summer of 1988 Sandy opened his superstore in Jacksonville Beach and then in August of 1999 Sandy opened a superstore in St. Augustine Beach.

Firewire Surfboards at Katin Surf Shop
In the late 1950s, Nancy and Walter Katin were in the business of making canvas boat covers, and the "multi" billion dollar surf wear industry of present and beyond was all but unimaginable. Yet one day a young man came into the Katin's shop in Surfside, California, complaining of the difficulty in finding a pair of swim shorts durable enough to stand up to the then-quirky pastime of surfboard riding. Walter focused on a vision with his sewing machine and some of the sturdy boat canvas previously used for boat covers and whipped up the first pair of Kanvas by Katin surf trunks .
The surfer was stoked. Word of Nancy and Walter's creation quickly spread up and down the coast, and the Katin's were suddenly in the surf trunk business. The American surf wear industry was born.

Firewire Surfboards at Catalyst San Clemente
The Catalyst building was constructed in the mid 20th century. Its original use was a church, thus the long narrow shape. It was later turned into a print shop and was filled with old school Heidelburgs (vintage printing press). Finally, in about 1970, Steve Boehne leased the building and put the first Infinity Surfboards shop and board factory in there. This lasted a couple years until Rick James and the infamous James Gang took over and the name changed to Rick James Surf Shop. Rick James is the former Greg Noll employee who cut his thumb off while making boards for Greg in the early 60's. Rick’s Thumb is now forever entombed by Greg in a cup of resin. It’s safely held by Greg to this day. It is a full chapter in Greg’s memoirs.
In the mid 70s, a looney-toon production board builder named Jim Nudo was working at both Hobie's factory in Capo Beach, Herbie Fletcher’s retail store in Dana Point and Ricky James’ factory in the Catalyst location. Nudo made a deal with Herbie to run his retail store in Dana Point and make the Herbie Fletcher boards in Ricky’s factory. In the late 70s, Ricky burned out and sold the business to Nudo. He renamed it Herbie Fletcher Surf shop. Jimmy closed the Dana Point shop and moved it to our location. The factory never skipped a beat.
Over the next 12 years, the rise of Herbie's longboard renaissance, the Astrodeck traction invention (and its dozens off knock-offs), the emergence of Christian and Nathan’s counterculture hero status, the surf video (as opposed to surf “films”) revolution (inspired by Herbie's "Wave Warriors" series, which included the first Jet Skis ever supped-up and modified specifically for towing people into big surf--all work done to them in the factory out back) and a little company called ...Lost all came forth from this little building off PCH.
The list of names of the shapers that have passed through and worked here is staggering: Steve Boehne, Terry Senate, Randy Sleigh (Josh's dad), Gordie Duane (ya know, first guy to ever put a shop in HB), Chris McElroy, Timmy Patterson, Bill Stewart (got his first shaping job in CA from Rick James at this shop) as well as Reno Abarilla used to shape here every summer, and taught Biolos a lot about outlines. Ken Bradshaw would come and shape in the summer, Steve Walden of Walden Longboards. Greg Jensen of Jen Lens; Mike Hynson himself parked his broken down motor home here for the entire summer of ‘89 and shaped when not incapacitated from substances. Jim Fuller (Biolos’ master), Rick Rock, and Midget Smith all shaped here. Also, Ed Leisure (The mastermind behind the Quiet Flight shops) came here as a young shaper in the 70s and shaped for Nudo and Herbie.
The store was one of the shops that bought Quiksilver boardshorts out of McKnight and Hackman's trunk the FIRST day they drove the coast selling them and remained on net-whenever for 15 years after. Jimmy Nudo stopped using Herbie's name to promote the shop in the early 90s and renamed it San Clemente Surf Co (as far as we know, it’s the only shop Kelly Slater has ever been kicked out of). The shop carried the San Clemente Surf Co name until Matt and Mike renamed it Catalyst in the fall of 2005.
Matt Biolos started working in the factory as an 18-year-old sander/board painter in 1987. He learned how to shape by being around all these and more forgotten characters. His first boards were called Ratz Ass, then Mayhem, then …Lost. The first …Lost surfboards were built here and the first …Lost Clothing warehouse was the second shaping room cleaned up to hold clothes (this lasted close to a year). The retail store was Rick Hazard’s sales office (he was paid hourly to run the retail by Nudo) while he made phone calls to shops around the country getting them to carry the boards.
Other noteworthy facts: There’s a surf spot 100 yards away (204) and an ocean view of the waves. Today, there are three guys in the back glassing boards for …Lost, the retail store has windows open into the factory to watch …Lost boards get built right there 6-7 days per week. It’s been a board-glassing factory for over 35 years nonstop, on PCH no less, and is very likely the last remaining true full service shop on the beach in California, or this country...maybe the world (Biolos refers to his worldly travels and having yet to see one.). Others Biolos doesn’t want left out: Garth and Gavin Day, Chris Barnum, Tom Sutherland, Hans Sylstra and other standout San Clemente local surfers who worked at the shop over the years and made him feel welcome and brought him into their culture.
